DHNH is a non-profit residential rehabilitation and transitional home for previously incarcerated women. They are aiming to expand the capacity of their home so that they can serve more women and offer more services.
The problem: They wanted a suite of fundraising materials developed within their style guide guidelines and using their existing logo, but noted that they did not like the logo. Someone had recently updated their style guide to include a brighter palette of colors and an additional font, but these had not been used anywhere yet. With this foundation, we needed to create materials (pocket folder, business card, envelopes, Case for Support, and donation card) that reflected a bold, positive, more contemporary, and feminine aesthetic that they could use as a visual strategy going forward.
The solution: Arts-related activities are important to the Home, and complement the residents' therapy. One recent graduate particularly enjoyed painting, and produced some works that are now displayed at the Home. One of her paintings, a large flower, happened to contain colors similar to those in the style guide. After permission, I cropped it and set it behind a white outline resembling bricks. The "Dismas Daisy," as it's now known, represents a strong foundation of positivity, success, and a cherished connection with the women to the Home. For donors, noting that the daisy was painted by a graduated resident who has now been reunited with her family and is contributing to her community is statement of proof that the program works, and a visual reminder that there are real people here who need help—a vital message in a time when so many non-profits are seeking additional donor support. The client is receiving so much positive feedback about the Dismas Daisy that they plan on phasing out their current logo in their next year and have requested a stylized version of it, as well as continuing to use it as currently designed in their marketing materials.
